Changes in eyesight are often attributed to aging. However, we should be aware of some daily habits that can negatively affect our vision. These include:

1. Not wearing UV-blocking sunglasses – UV exposure can cause macular degeneration and cataracts. Use sunglasses and a wide-brim hat whenever you are outside.

2. Staring at your computer or smartphone all day – Excessive screen time can lead to digital eye strain. Symptoms include eye fatigue, dry eyes, irritated eyes, and headaches. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: For every 20 minutes of screen time, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds or more.

3. Smoking – smoking can lead to vision loss by increasing the risk for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and Dry Eye Syndrome.

4. Rubbing the eyes – Rubbing our eyes, especially with dirty hands, may cause infections like conjunctivitis. It can also cause scratches to the cornea if there is a foreign body or rupture of the tiny blood vessels resulting in bloodshot eyes.

5. Foregoing safety goggles – Some may feel that this is an unnecessary precaution, but eye injuries are a common cause of injury in the workplace that could have been prevented or the severity of the injury reduced with proper eye protection.

6. Relying on anti-redness eye drops – Whitening or decongestant eye-drops (with active ingredients like tetrahydrazoline) cause vasoconstriction of the blood vessels. Best to treat the root cause of the redness because stopping after prolonged usage may cause rebound redness.

7. Skipping the annual eye exam – Early detection of eye disease is critical, especially if there is an underlying medical condition such as hypertension or diabetes.

8. Not drinking enough water – Dehydration causes a decrease in tear production, resulting in dry eyes, eye strain, and vision problems. Staying hydrated will keep your eyes healthy too.
