Don’t let the virus feel at-home with these essential cleaning tips.

A viral infection is something you need to address before everyone in the house gets sick. Keeping the virus from spreading throughout your household is difficult, but not impossible. While the flu virus can be passed around quickly, there are ways to keep it at bay.

Since cold and flu viruses can survive on surfaces for up to 24 hours, it is crucial to disinfect your home once someone gets sick. Here are other tips to safeguarding your home and family.

  1. Let some air into the house. Open your windows and let fresh air come inside. Raise the blinds and let the sunrise with vitamin D sink in. If you have centralized air conditioning in your home, switch out the air filter right after someone in your house catches the flu. This method is the cheapest and easiest way to make sure that germs do not circulate back in your home.

  2. Prepare your cleaning materials. Use store-bought and natural disinfectant sprays to clean your home. Make sure to check the components of the spray and follow the instructions on the bottle. The disinfectant should remain on surfaces for 4 to 10 minutes before wiping it dry.

Avoid using the same bleach that you use for laundry since laundry bleach is designed for washing and not for germicidal use.

  3. Replace cleaning wipes regularly. Using paper towels is more advisable than using a sponge and cleaning cloths with disinfectant sprays because the latter can quickly absorb and spread the virus.

  4. Leave wastebaskets around the home. Make sure to set aside a different wastebasket for used tissue and wipes. Before throwing the bag away, seal it with a big knot for easy transport and dispose immediately.

  5. Disinfect your gadgets. Since devices are the most touched items in the house, disinfect everything including your phones, landlines, computer keyboards, and other devices that you frequently touch. Aside from the recent virus, those gadgets may still have other germs on them that can start a new infection. Use a disinfectant wipe, a cotton pad that is soaked in rubbing alcohol, or a microfiber cloth with hydrogen peroxide to sanitize.
